Magic as Design - Design’s Roots in Magic

Learning Goal:

The goal of this project was to explore the deeper aspects of Design Thinking. For my research, I examined what role magic could play in design thinking and what could be learned from adopting design as a type of magic. At the end of this process, I produced a book that existed in two forms: one a bound book and another as removable cards that can give tarot readings.

Learning Outcomes:

Writing this book allowed me to gain firsthand the deep insight that can come from examining disciplines beyond design. The result of this was a central theme meant to expand design by combining subjects like post-materialism, bricolage, chaos magic, and plurality with today’s designing thinking. I called this combination “Magic Thinking.”
